Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs is not a misnomer; Colter Wall's third LP is a trad country record from its title to its songs about cowpokes and dances and chain restaurants in budget hotels. It's a whole new look for Wall, who refuses to play to type here; he's not the sad bastard bard of Saskatchewan here, he's doing more of the rodeo sounds of Marty Robbins (a Wall favorite) than Townes Van Zandt here. It's a welcome turn all the same: It allows him to show off the varied sounds of his distinctive voice to shocking results. "Cowpoke" might be the most beautifully sung song of 2020, full stop. He's a VMP favorite for a reason, get this record and hit the dusty trail.
